はじめに

英作文の場合、日本語を直訳しただけでは不自然な英文になってしまうことがよくあります。ひどいときには、文法にも誤りが生じて、意味不明の英語になることさえある。

このコーナーでは特に、よく見かけるけど直訳しただけでは不可の日本語表現、英語で表現するにはどうしたらいいのか見当さえつかない日本語表現を集めて、なるべく平易な単語を使って英訳しています。

どういう日本語表現が英訳しにくいのか、どういう日本語表現が直訳では不可なのか、自然な英文に直すにはどういう言い回しや構文を使えばよいのか、一つの例として参考にして下さい。

定番の英語表現(1)
「〜ぶりに〜する」 → "for the first time in 〜" 先頭へ

ブランクの期間がどれほどかを表わす

「〜ぶりに」は、「〜のうちで初めてのことだ」と考えて"for the first time in 〜"を使います。

【例文】:十年ぶりにクルマを運転した。
【 × 】:I drove a car since ten years.
【 × 】:I drove a car for ten years.
【 ○ 】:I drove a car for the first time in ten years.

"in"の次に「〜年、〜日、〜カ月」に当たる表現を入れます。

【例文】:三日ぶりに登校した。
【英訳】:I went to school for the first time in three days.
【例文】:三カ月ぶりに登校した。
【英訳】:I went to school for the first time in three months.

「〜の二倍だ」 → "twice as 〜 as" 先頭へ

いわゆる「倍数」の表現

「〜倍」を表わす「倍数表現」は"as 〜 as"を使います。

【例文】:マラソンランナーはやせているけど、常人の二倍は食べる。
【英訳】:Marathon runners eat twice as much food as ordinary people though they are slender.

"twice"の部分を変更すれば、「三倍、四倍」なども表現できます。

【例文】:マラソンランナーはやせているけど、常人の三倍は食べる。
【英訳】:Marathon runners eat three times as much food as ordinary people though they are slender.
【例文】:マラソンランナーはやせているけど、常人の四倍は食べる。
【英訳】:Marathon runners eat four times as much food as ordinary people though they are slender.

「三倍」以上は"times"を使います。"three times"(三倍)、 "four times"(四倍)、"a hundred times"(百倍)、"two million times"(二百万倍)です。

定番の英語表現(3)
「〜して初めて…する」 → "it is not until 〜 that …" 先頭へ

「〜して初めて…する」=「…するまで〜しない」

「〜して初めて…する」は「…するまで〜しない」と考えて、"it is not until 〜 that …"を使います。"it is … that 〜"の強調構文を使わない場合は、"… not until 〜"となります。

【例文】:冬が終って初めて春が来る。
(= 冬が終るまで春は来ない)
【英訳】:It is not until winter is over that spring comes.
(= Spring doesn't come until winter is over.)

"until 〜"は文ではなく、語句でもOKです。

【例文】:夜中になって初めてサンタさんは来るんだよ。
(= 夜中になるまでサンタさんは来ないんだよ)
【英訳】:It is not until midnight that Santa Claus comes.
(= Santa Claus doesn't come until midnight.)

定番の英語表現(4)
「〜する人が増える」 → "There are more and more people who 〜" 先頭へ

「〜する人が増える」= "There are more and more people who 〜"

「(数が)増える」はお手軽に「more and more + 名詞」で表わすことができます。「人数が増える」なら"There are more and more people who 〜"です。

【例文】:結婚を望まない若者が増えている。
【英訳】:There are more and more young people who don't want to marry.
(= The number of young people who don't want to marry is increasing.)
→"more and more people" =「人数が増える」

「〜する人が減る」= "There are less and less people who 〜"

「(数が)減る」は"less and less"でOKです。

【例文】:結婚を望む若者が減っている。
【英訳】:There are less and less young people who want to marry.
(= The number of young people who want to marry is decreasing.)
→"less and less people" =「人数が減る」

"more and more"と"less and less"は両方とも数が変化するニュアンスを含むので、時制は現在のままでOKです。

"There"も"who"も使わない場合

"There 〜"や"who 〜"を使わずにもっと短く表現することも可能です。"More and more 〜"や"Less and less 〜"を主語にします。

【例文】:結婚を望まない若者が増えている。
【英訳】:More and more young people don't want to marry.
(= There are more and more young people who don't want to marry.)
(= The number of young people who don't want to marry is increasing.)
→"more and more people" =「人数が増える」

【例文】:結婚を望む若者が減っている。
【英訳】:Less and less young people want to marry.
(= There are less and less young people who want to marry.)
(= The number of young people who want to marry is decreasing.)
→"less and less people" =「人数が減る」

定番の英語表現(5)
「〜ではないと思う」 → "I don't think that 〜" 先頭へ

「〜ではないと思う」=「〜とは思わない」

日本語ではよく「〜ではないと思う」と表現します。一方、英語では「〜とは思わない」と表現するほうが普通です。"I think that 〜"を否定して"I don't think 〜"とします。

# 「〜ではないと思う」=「〜とは思わない」= I don't think 〜

【例文】:このカレーは激辛だとは思わない。
(= このカレーは激辛ではないと思う)
【 △ 】:I think that this curry is not extremely spicy.
【 ○ 】:I don't think that this curry is extremely spicy.
→"not"を前に置いた"I don't think"が普通

思考を表わす動詞のごく少数が同じ構文を作ります。

"not"がthat節の前に出る代表的な動詞

【例文】:その議員が本当のことを言っているとはとても思えない。
(= その議員は絶対に本当のことを言ってはいないと思う)
【 △ 】:I believe that the lawmaker doesn't tell the truth.

→"not"を前に置いた"I don't believe"が普通

【例文】:二酸化炭素の排出量が削減されるとは思えない。
(= 二酸化炭素の排出量は削減されないと思う)

→"not"を前に置いた"We don't expect"が普通

「〜するようになる」 → 「come + to不定詞」や「learn + to不定詞」 先頭へ

何かをすることができるようになる

状態が変化することを表わすときは、「come + to不定詞」や「learn + to不定詞」を使います。「learn + to不定詞」を使うと努力や経験を重ねて何かができるようになるニュアンスを強調します。

状態の変化を表わす語句
  • come + to不定詞, learn + to不定詞
    (= [主語]が〜するようになる、〜できるようになる、〜することが可能になる、〜し始める)

【例文】:最近、子供のころに嫌いだった食べ物を好きになってきた
【英訳】:Recently I've come to like foods that I didn't like when I was a child.
→食べ物を自然と好きになったので「come + to不定詞」を使う

【例文】:この会社で働くつもりなら、フォークリフトを動かせるようになる必要があります。
【英訳】:You must learn to operate the forklift if you want to work in this company.
→フォークリフトの操縦には技術が必要なので「learn + to不定詞」を使う

「become + to不定詞」は不可

日本語の「〜するようになる」に釣られた「become + to不定詞」は文法的に不可。"become"はto不定詞を取りません。通例、「become + 名詞」や「become + 形容詞」の形で使います。

【例文】:I want to become a surgeon.
【和訳】:外科医になりたい。
→"surgeon"(外科医)は名詞

【例文】:Citizens have become suspicious of the police.
【和訳】:市民は警察を疑いの目で見るようになった。
→"suspicious"(疑った)は形容詞

【例文】:最近、子供のころに嫌いだった食べ物を好きになってきた
【 × 】:Recently I've become to like foods that I didn't like when I was a child.
【 ○ 】:Recently I've come to like foods that I didn't like when I was a child.
→「become + to不定詞」は不可、「come + to不定詞」を使う

「見かけ通り〜」 → "as 〜 as it looks" 先頭へ

見た目の印象と同じである

見た目通りであることを表わすときは"as 〜 as it looks"を使います。

文全体の主語の「数」や「人称」に合わせて"it"は"they"や"he"などに変化させます。時制も文の内容に合わせて"look"を"looked"や"had looked"などに変化させます。

【例文】:塾の英語の先生は見かけ通りやさしい
【英訳】:The English teacher at the cram school is as gentle as he looks.

【例文】:この魚の干物は見かけ通りくさかった
【英訳】:This dried fish was as stinking as it looked.

否定文になると意味は「見かけほど〜ではない」です。

【例文】:Raccoons are not as tame as they look.
【英訳】:アライグマは見かけほどおとなしくはありません。

見た目の印象とは違う

外見とは違うことを表わすときは「比較級 + than it looks」を使います。

文全体の主語の「数」や「人称」に合わせて"it"は"they"や"he"などに変化させます。時制も文の内容に合わせて"look"を"looked"や"had looked"などに変化させます。

【例文】:カバは見かけよりも足が速い
【英訳】:Hippos run faster than they look.

【例文】:ピラミッドは写真で見るよりもはるかに大きかった
【英訳】:The pyramid was much bigger than it had looked in pictures.

否定文になると意味は「見かけほど〜ではない」です。

【例文】:私は見かけほど年寄りではありません
【英訳】:I'm not older than I look.

「思った通り〜」 → "as I expected" 先頭へ

予想通りにコトが運ぶ

物事が自分の考えた通りであることを表わすときは"as I expected"を使います。

文全体の主語の「数」や「人称」に合わせて"I"は"they"や"people"などに変化させます。時制も文の内容に合わせて"expected"を"had expected"に変化させます。

【例文】:私の記憶は思った通り不正確だった
【英訳】:My memories were as inaccurate as I expected.

【例文】:すべては我々の思惑通りに運んだ。
【英訳】:Everything has worked out as well as we expected.

"just as I expected"や"exactly as I expected"を独立させて単独で使うこともあります。意味は「思った通り、予想通り、やはり」です。

【例文】:思った通り、さっきの電話は振り込め詐欺だった。
【英訳】:Just as I expected, that phone call was remittance fraud.

否定文になると意味は「予想に反して」です。

【例文】:経済の回復は予想ほど順調ではなかった
【英訳】:Economic recovery was not as good as I had expected.

「思ったよりは〜」 → 「比較級 + than I expected」 先頭へ

予想外の展開

物事が予想外であることを表わすときは「比較級 + than I expected」を使います。

文全体の主語の「数」や「人称」に合わせて"I"は"they"や"people"などに変化させます。時制も文の内容に合わせて"expected"を"had expected"に変化させます。

【例文】:夜は予想以上に寒かったので風邪をひいてしまいました。
【英訳】:Since it was colder at night than I had expected, I caught a cold.

【例文】:津波は予想以上に早くやって来ることがある。
【英訳】:Tsunamis sometimes come sooner than people expected.

否定文になると意味は「予想ほどではない」です。

【例文】:面接を受けたとき、思ったほど緊張はしなかった
【英訳】:I didn't get more nervous than I had expected when I had the interview.

主語が原因を表わす表現 → "cause, lead to, etc" 先頭へ

主語が原因で何かが起こる

物事の原因と結果を表わす語句の中で、主語が原因を表わすものをまとめます。

ニュアンスは「[主語]が原因で〜という結果になる」です。主語で結果を表わすときは"follow"や"result from"などを使います→【参照】:『主語が原因を表わす表現"follow, result from, etc"

主語が原因を表わす主な表現
  • cause 〜, lead to 〜, result in 〜, make 〜 happen, bring about 〜, give rise to 〜
    (= [主語]が〜を発生させる、[主語]が原因で〜が起こる、[主語]のせいで〜となる、[主語]のおかげて〜となる、[主語]が起こって結果として〜となる、〜の原因は[主語]だ)

"happen"は使役動詞"make"と一緒に使うと「〜を発生させる、〜を引き起こす」の意味を表わすことができます。

# [主語] + make 〜 happen([主語]が〜を発生させる、[主語]が〜を引き起こす)

"lead to"と"give rise to"の次には名詞あるいは名詞として使った語句を置きます。to不定詞ではありません。

# [主語] + lead to + 名詞([主語]が〜を発生させる、[主語]が〜を引き起こす)
# [主語] + give rise to + 名詞([主語]が〜を発生させる、[主語]が〜を引き起こす)

【例文】:前例のない大雨が大規模な洪水と地すべりを引き起こした
【英訳】:Unprecedented heavy rainfall caused massive floods and landslides.
【英訳】:Unprecedented heavy rainfall led to massive floods and landslides.
【英訳】:Unprecedented heavy rainfall resulted in massive floods and landslides.
【英訳】:Unprecedented heavy rainfall made massive floods and landslides happen.
【英訳】:Unprecedented heavy rainfall brought about massive floods and landslides.
【英訳】:Unprecedented heavy rainfall gave rise to massive floods and landslides.
(= Massive floods and landslides followed unprecedented heavy rainfall.)

【例文】:世界的な気温の上昇は温室効果ガスの排出が原因だ

何かが起こった後の結果が主語である

物事の原因と結果を表わす語句の中で、主語が結果を表わすものをまとめます。

ニュアンスは「〜の結果が[主語]だ」です。主語で原因を表わすときは"cause"や"lead to"などを使います→【参照】:『主語が原因を表わす表現 → "cause, lead to, etc"

  • follow 〜, result from 〜, arise from 〜
    (= 〜に続いて[主語]が起こる、〜のあとに[主語]が発生する、〜が原因で[主語]となる)、〜すると[主語]になる)

【例文】:医療が発達して平均寿命が伸びた。
【英訳】:The increase in average life expectancy followed the development of medicine.
【英訳】:The increase in average life expectancy resulted from the development of medicine.
【英訳】:The increase in average life expectancy arose from the development of medicine.
(= The development of medicine caused the increase in average life expectancy.)

【例文】:クリーンエネルギーが普及すれば化石燃料の使用を抑えることができるだろう。
【英訳】:The reduction of fossil fuel usage will follow the spread of clean energy.
【英訳】:The reduction of fossil fuel usage will result from the spread of clean energy.

断言せずにワンクッションを置く

「〜である」と断言するのではなく、「〜のようだ、〜と思います」とやや控え目な態度を表わす表現をまとめます。

断定を避ける表現
  1. 個人的な意見(私は〜だと思う) → "I think that, etc"

      (= 私は〜だと思う、私は〜だと考える、私は〜という意見だ)
    2. I believe that 〜
      (= 私は〜だと思う、私は〜だと考える、私は〜と信じる)
    3. I feel that 〜
      (= 私は〜だと思う、私は〜だと考える、私は〜のような気がする)
    4. in my opinion 〜, in my view 〜, to my mind 〜, my opinion is that 〜, my view is that 〜

  3. あまり自信がない推測(たぶん〜) → "possibly, etc"
  4. わりと自信がある推測(きっと〜) → "probably, etc"
  5. かなり自信がある推測(確かに〜) → "certainly, etc"

      (= 確かに、間違いなく、必ず、確実に、疑いなく、疑う余地もなく、まぎれもなく、絶対に)
